A community experiment in the Allegheny Highlands dedicated to rethinking art and education in uncertain times.
|
Nestled in Allegheny Highlands of western Virginia, Little Valley School is a community experiment dedicated to redirecting our attention away from products and toward practice, process, and "problems." Musician and educator Emilie Rex and filmmaker Rick Alverson created the school in early 2025 as a place for exploring art's value in increasingly uncertain times. The school convenes conversations among artists, thinkers, and doers--across sectors and disciplines--that embrace uncertainty, explore limitations and absurdity, challenge binaries, and practice radical co-creation. Initial projects will take place online with in-person events planned for late 2026.
PROJECT
SCHOOLHOUSE
With five chestnut-paneled bedrooms and ample collective space, the schoolhouse is one of the original farmsteads in the valley and will be the first hub for Little Valley School. We hope to have completed the structural rehabilitation of the schoolhouse by fall 2026 with construction on additional studios and living spaces soon to follow.
LAND
Little Valley School is located on 323 acres between Little Mountain and Jack Mountain, in the karst region of western Virginia. The tract includes two 1/8th acre ponds, several natural gravity-fed springs, and Little Valley Run, a headwater of the James River.
We share the valley with black bears, bobcats, wild turkeys, deer, and the endangered golden-winged warbler and rusty patch bumble bee, among others.

The Schoolhouse is one of the oldest farmsteads in the valley.
